When he was around 1½ years old, Ned and Alice's
son Bill
came to live with Eliza, Minnie and
George
on John Street. It was only a two years later that Uncle George left for
The War.
George entered training for the Great War in Europe,
having enlisted with the Canadian Expeditionary
Forces
in April of 1916, stationed at Camp Borden in Barrie.

House 1917-18
Bill stayed at the house on John Steet for the next few
years. His Aunts Minnie and Eliza would also take him to visit Minnie's
brother Clarence on his farm north of town.
Bill's first real memory was of his Aunts preparing a Christmas package
to send overseas to Uncle George. It was 1917, and George was still in
England. When it arrived he would find homemade Christmas cake, chewing
tobacco and two pairs of knit khaki socks.
George returned from War in March of 1919, and
everyone went to Toronto to
meet his train.
