The Bradford House 1919

George returns
from The War
20 March 1919

Aunt Eliza and Aunt Minnie drove to Toronto in Uncle Clarence's car to meet George as he returned to Canada after almost two years at war.
Welcome Home 4th C.M.R.

The train from Halifax  arrived in the North Toronto Station at 8 p.m. and George emerged with his fellow soldiers. From there George's battalion, the 4th Canadian Mounted Rifles, marched downtown for their final dismissal:
"Thousands of relatives crowded the station, throngs lined the streets and swelled the Armouries, making one of the greatest ovations which the city ever witnessed. The Battalion with difficulty formed up on Yonge Street, wearing their steel helmets and war regalia and marched in column-of-route to Bloor Street, through Queen's Park to the Armouries [above Queen St. on University Ave.]. In front of the Parliament Buildings, Brigadier-General J. Gunn, Commanding Military District No. 2, was waiting with his staff and other officials on a saluting base and for the last time the battalion gave 'eyes left.'"
Final march of the 4th

George was 'struck off strength' on March 26th, after exactly 13 months spent with the 4th C.M.R., and 22 months total overseas.

Further stories of Minnie & Eliza in Bradford, George's  time with Clarence Wood and more to be added in future.
