Standard
Bank c.1903 to 1911 |
It may be no coincidence that Mortons were associated with the Standard
Bank in Bradford. Dr. George D. Morton owned the premises for a time, and
willed it to Dr. Edward's son Francis G. Morton in 1895. In 1896, cousin
John Elliott succeeded Mr. Dewson as the bank manager (13).
Sometime between 1901 and 1905,
Ned began working there, moving
from Holland Landing to an apartment in the building.
Historical summary: 1900's
Over the course of the next few years, Ned was
transferred from Bradford to Picton, then to Belleville, no doubt rejoining
John Elliott, who also moved on to Belleville in 1906. Ned finally was
put into the head office in Toronto by around 1911. It was here that Ned
met Alice Holtorf .
Alice was working in the Parliament Buildings as a secretary for the Deputy
Minister for the Women's Institute, having taken a business course in Toronto.

Live on Pacific Ave.
1912 |
Ned and Alice married on January 16, 1912.
Upon their marriage, Ned quit the bank and opened a grocery store on
Pacific Avenue in Toronto's High Park area. Their first three children
were born while the family was living in an apartment over the store: Bill,
Mary and Betty. After a few years Ned sold the store for a good profit,
returned to the bank, and soon purchased a house on Raymond Avenue near
Jane Street.
Bill went to live with
Minnie & Eliza in Bradford once Mary was born. |
Family

1917 |
The family moved to 75 Raymond Avenue in 1917 once Ned had rejoined
the bank, now absorbed by the Royal Bank of Canada. Here Jean was born,
completing the family of four children.

Further research will attempt to discover the family history in Ireland
before the 1820's, and complete the story of Alice's parents' families,
the Holtorfs and the Hulses. |
