      1632. Patrick9 FITZGERALD (child of William, #3264);[970],[971],[970] A 1631 petition states Patrick was William's second son (John was first, and and Maurice third).[972] Patrick and his brother Maurice left Dingle in 1632 along with two hundred men they had raised from their Kerry estates to enlist in the Spanish army. Both became career officers in the Spanish army. Patrick had formed his own Spanish infantry division in 1640, but was refused permission to return to Ireland to aid the Confederates in 1641.[973] Patrick and Maurice began as captains in the Count of Tyrconnell's new Tercio (Regiment) in 1632.[974] Patrick was a colonel in the Spanish Army of Flanders, commanded by Don Fernando de Austria, governor of the Spanish Netherlands.[975],[976] 'The bravery of the remaining Irish at the terrible sieges of Arras and Genrep, in 1640-1641, brought them undying fame.'[977] In 1641, after the siege of Arras, Colonel Patrick Fitzgerald and the survivors of his unit were sent to Catalonia.[978] In 1645, Patrick was admitted as a Knight of Santiago in Spain.[979],[980] Patrick's division was part of the Spanish force that relieved the town of Lérida.[975] Patrick Fitzgerald seems to have returned to Ireland in 1647. His Tercio had the longest service of all the Irish units in the Peninsula (seven years).[975]

          Attended grammar school at Well village with Thomas Wentworth.[1000] Attended Clare College, Cambridge 1607-11 and Gray's Inn 1612.[1001] "He entered Parliament as MP for Aldborough in 1621 and 1624. He was then returned for Richmond in 1625 and 1626 and Thirsk in 1628. His rise to importance was due primarily to his close friendship with Sir Thomas Wentworth, afterwards Earl of Strafford, who was his distant cousin."[1002] "In 1633 he accompanied Wentworth to Ireland, where he became Master of the Rolls."[1002] He was MP for Kildare in the Irish Parliaments and was a member of the Privy Council of Ireland between 1634 and 1639 at Ireland.[1002] He he acquired the lucrative estate where he planted settlers and ran an ironworks in 1636 at Castlecomer, Co.
