1632. Patrick9 FITZGERALD (child of William, #3264);[1160],[1161],[1160] A 1631 petition states Patrick was William's second son (John was first, and and Maurice third).[1162] Patrick and his brother Maurice left Dingle in 1632 along with two hundred men they had raised from their Kerry estates to enlist in the Spanish army. Both became career officers in the Spanish army. Patrick had formed his own Spanish infantry division in 1640, but was refused permission to return to Ireland to aid the Confederates in 1641.[1163] Patrick and Maurice began as captains in the Count of Tyrconnell's new Tercio (Regiment) in 1632.[1164] Patrick was a colonel in the Spanish Army of Flanders, commanded by Don Fernando de Austria, governor of the Spanish Netherlands.[1165],[1166] 'The bravery of the remaining Irish at the terrible sieges of Arras and Genrep, in 1640-1641, brought them undying fame.'[1167] In 1641, after the siege of Arras, Colonel Patrick Fitzgerald and the survivors of his unit were sent to Catalonia.[1168] In 1645, Patrick was admitted as a Knight of Santiago in Spain.[1169],[1170] Patrick's division was part of the Spanish force that relieved the town of Lérida.[1165] Patrick Fitzgerald seems to have returned to Ireland in 1647. His Tercio had the longest service of all the Irish units in the Peninsula (seven years).[1165]

3264. William10 FITZGERALD 11th Knight of Kerry (child of John, #6528);[1160],[1160] born circa 1560 at Ireland;[1227] married Margaret Tobin before 1582;[1228],[1229] married Mary O'Connor (see #3265), daughter of Calvagh O'Connor of Derrymullen, King's County, before 1603;[1228] died 6 Nov 1640.[1230]

William took a neutral stance in the Nine Years' War (Tyrone's Rebellion) by not aiding rebel James Fitzthomas Fitzgerald, who then burned William's town (Dingle). William initially supported an English commander Sir Charles Wilmot, though after joining the rebels side, Wilmot defeated William in 1602. He eventually recanted and was restored to his lands.[1163]

Children of William10 Fitzgerald 11th Knight of Kerry and Mary O'Connor (see #3265) were as follows:

                    • 1632. i. Patrick9 Fitzgerald.

                    • ii. John Fitzgerald 12th Knight of Kerry;[1160],[1160] married Katherine Lansdowne.[1228]

Irish Commissioners petitioned the Council of State in London in favour of John, in 1654, noting his sufferings at the hands of the Confederates and his protection of Protestants, and goes on to state that 'notwithstanding his being a native and a Roman Catholic, he may be put into equal capacity with the English in their civil freedom and liberty, as a sign of merit".[1231] John was certainly in possession of his lands by 1659, but later vested in the Crown. He petitioned the Irish Parliament in 1665, regained the estate in 1667, but not formally restored until 1679 when John"s heir and namesake had a regrant.[1231] "It would seem that the property of the Knight[s] of Kerry remained considerable until at least the second half of the 17th century. Thus we know that John FitzGerald, 12th Knight of Kerry, successfully petitioned the House of Commons in 1665 for the return of property which he had held near Dingle and in the baronies of Clanmaurice, Iraghticonnor, Trughanacmy and Magunihy and which had been vested in the crown under the Act of Settlement. The family seems to have lost much of its Kerry property between this time and the middle of the 18th century."[1232]

                    • iii. . William Fitzgerald;[1160],[1233] William, became a Dominican priest and had fled to Madrid by 1639.[1170] William was procurator of the Irish Dominican Province in Spain in 1640.[1234]

                    • iv. . Maurice Fitzgerald;[1160],[1160] Maurice left Dingle in 1632 with his brother Patrick and two hundred local men to enlist in the Spanish army.[1170] Patrick and Maurice began as captains in the Count of Tyrconnell's new Tercio (Regiment) in 1632.[1164] Maurice died in Flanders in 1640, leaving a son, Oliver, in Spanish service.[1231]

                    • v. Ellen Fitzgerald.[1160],[1160]

3265. Mary10 O'CONNOR (child of Calvagh, #6530);[1160] married William Fitzgerald 11th Knight of Kerry (see #3264), son of John Fitzgerald 10th Knight of Kerry and Shile O'Sullivan Mor, before 1603.[1228]
