Francis Morton Sr. appears on the Tithe Applotment for Carnew Parish occupying a townland called Tomnafinnoge in 1833. This doesn't necessarily mean the family moved from Glenphilipeen to Tomnafinnoge. The Tithe Applotment was recording 'occupation' for purposes of paying church tithes, and this could mean simply farming, but other records do indicate the Mortons lived at Woodmount farm in Tomnafinnoge, about 6 kilometres walk from Tinahely town.

Of Tomnafinnoge's 328 acres (arable land), Francis had 87 acres leased from Earl Fitzwilliam. The Earl's home in Ireland was Coolatin Park, in the centre of his huge estate which was one of the largest in the country. Coolatin park can be seen in the far right of the photo above, looking down on Tomnafinnoge from a nearby hill.
Francis
Morton Sr. & Great Famine
1845 |
Another study to be inserted here (when time allows) would detail the experiences of the Coolatin Estate through the Famine times. Records of emigrations exist which may include Dr. George Morton. It has been recorded that about 30% of the population of Wicklow County was died during the years of the potato failures.
