Francis
Morton Sr. and
Eliza Barrett 1820 |
Francis Morton Sr. is thought to be part of the third generation of Tinahely Mortons. Sometime before 1820 he married Elizabeth Barrett in a ceremony outside of Kilcommon Parish, probably wherever Eliza's family lived. Some of their family baptisms were recorded in the Kilcommon church at Tinahely, and these constitute the earliest evidence of our Mortons there.

Their children are James, George Dean, William, Ellen, Francis Jr., Sarah, Elizabeth and Edward Dean, born between 1820 and 1836. Only James, William and Ellen have their baptisms registered in Kilcommon Parish. Francis Sr. is shown to have had two residences in the Tinahely area. Perhaps the family moved and changed parish churches. Their first residence may have been at Glenphilipeen. |

Francis
Sr. at
Glenphilipeen 1826 |
Francis Sr. occupied the farm called Glenphilipeen about a kilometre from Tinahely. A farm of about 235 acres, Glenphilipeen lay on the steep slopes of the hill west of town. There were about five homesteads on the farm then, and although he is not farming here, Francis Sr. appears as the main lease-holder during the 1826 Tithe Applotment of Kilcommon Parish.
