Superintendent
at hospital in Collingwood
1903 |
Shortly after graduating from nursing school, Martha went
to Collingwood and became the first superintendent at the General and Marine
Hospital there in 1903.
It was at the General and Marine that her sister Nancy
also studied nursing and where she met Jack Mather around 1909/10 . |
Nursing Sister in the Great
War
1916 |
Martha joined the Ontario Military Hospital as a Nursing
Sister in February of 1916. Her overseas posting was as the night supervisor
at the hospital in Orpington, England.
Fighting
had ended during the summer of 1918, and Martha received this invitation
to meet with the Queen Mother after receiving her Royal Red Cross on 17th
October, 1918 at Buckingham Palace. Martha attended Marlborough House and
met Queen Alexandra, mother of George V, King of England. The Royal Red
Cross is now affixed to her grave marker shown below. |
Superintendent at Strathroy
Hospital
c.1919 - 1925 |
After the war, Martha joined the Strathroy Hospital, became
its superintendent. Here she met and married Duncan Maceachurn, a former
patient, and retired to Alvinston in 1925. |
Dies in 1934 |
According to her sister Nancy, Martha died of throat cancer at the Strathroy
Hospital. Read Martha's obituary,
and view her stone.
Future work may reveal greater detail of Martha's war
experiences, and more details from the Collingwood Hospital -- especially
a good photograph. -MB
