John Adams;[986] died killed by an Indian for money he carried in his belt circa 1784 at Wheelersborough (Hampden), Penobscot Co., Maine, United States of America.[987]

    He and Elizabeth Burnham lived in 1765 at Gardinerstown, Lincoln Co., Maine, British America; as a blacksmith.[988] "He... settled near the mouth of the Sowadabscook... was a carpenter, and soon had sufficient house and outbuildings put up for himself, which he followed by the erection of mills [1776]... A number of early settlers came... They experienced some annoyance and fear from the threats and menaces of the Indians; but were not driven away until after they were disturbed by the movements of the British up the river, following the defeat... at the Castine peninsula [1779], and abandoned their homes and fled with our soldiers and sailors... Most of them returned in 1783."[989],[990] "He removed to Maine about 1767 and was one of the first settlers at Hampden, ME, where he built and ran a saw and grist mill, which was at first called Wheelersboro after him."[991],[992] He lived between 1767 and 1772 at Penobscot Co., Maine, British America; as the area's first settler.[993]

      "He is said to have been the first white child born on the Penobscot River above Castine, Me. He was a wharf builder by trade, and built the famous "Long Wharf" at Hampden, Me., near which the U. S. frigate John Adams was blown up to keep her from falling into the hands of the British.       In 1770, Simeon Gorton arrived on the banks of the Penobscot River from Connecticut.[1030] Simeon Gorton first settled in Orrington, then in Hampden, where he served as constable and deputy sheriff.[1031] He lived in 1774 at Orrington, Maine, British America; on 100 acres, this being the east side of the Penobscot River.[1032] He lived on 1 Jun 1776 at Orrington, Maine, British America.[1033] He appeared on the census of 1777 at Penobscot Twp., Sagadahoc Co., Maine, United States of America.[1034] He lived in 1778 at Wheelersborough (Hampden), Maine, United States of America; when chosen by the the inhabitants of the west side of the Penobscot River to be one of several collectors, and lived closer to the Sowadabscook Stream.[1035] He appeared on the census of 1790 at Conduskeag Plantation (Wheelersborough), Hancock Co., Maine, United States of America; where there were 2 males under 16 (James and unknown), 1 was 16 and over (Simeon 40) and 5 females (Priscilla 15, Wealthea 11, Elizabeth 9, Matilda 7, and Simeon's wife).[1036] Wheelersborough was renamed Hampden in 1794.[649] He appeared on the census of 1800 at Hampden, Maine, United States of America; where Simeon was born Rhode Island, 1 male was under 10 (unknown), 1 was 10-16 (unknown), 2 were 16-26 (unknown), 1 was 45 and over (Simeon 50), and 3 females were 16-26 (Priscilla 25, Elizabeth 19 and Matilda 17), and 2 were 45 and over (Simeon's wife, and one unknown).[1037] He left a will on 14 Jan 1817; which gave to his wife Catherine, daughter Priscilla Dennett, (?)
