6. Henry3 HULSE (child of Thomas2, Thomas1);[107],[108] born 7 Aug 1839 at Basford, Co. They lived on 6 acres on concession 9, lot 33 (Schomberg), having 1 house, 1 barn, 4 carriages, 5 wagons, 2 ploughs and a fanning mill. 5 1/2 acres were pasture. Henry also owned 1 town lot (upon which must have been the hotel).[117] He and Alice Theresa Doyle lived in 1877; on the Clarkson-Hughes farm, but stayed only one year.[49] Took possession of the Royal Hotel of Newmarket, 3 Jan 1878.[118] He and Alice Theresa Doyle lived from 2 Jan 1878 to 1881 at Royal Hotel, Newmarket, Ontario, Canada; for four years.[119],[118] He and Alice Theresa Doyle appeared on the census of 1881 at Newmarket, York Co., Ontario, Canada; where Henry (39) was a Hotel Keeper, and Alice (36), Mary Jane (14), Barkley (11), Walter (9), Addie (7), and Henry (5) were present.[120] He and Alice Theresa Doyle lived between 1883 and 1889 at Paisly House, Orangeville, Dufferin Co., Ontario, Canada.[121] He and Alice Theresa Doyle lived from 1889 to 1897 at Wilson House, Toronto, York Co., Ontario, Canada; Henry was the proprietor of Wilson House, a hotel in Toronto, at 111-113 York Street, on the south-east corner of Pearl. Walter was a bartender and Barkley was the clerk. A photo of Wilson House in circa 1900 exists.[122],[123],[56] He and Alice Theresa Doyle appeared on the census of 1891 at St. Andrew's Ward, Toronto, York Co., Ontario, Canada; where Henry (51), a hotel keeper with 5 employees, and Alice (48). Bartly (21) head clerk, Walter (19), Harry (15), Alice (17) and Henry's mother Mary (88) were also present.[124] He and Alice Theresa Doyle lived from 1897 to 1900 at Central Hotel, Bradford, Simcoe Co., Ontario, Canada; where he acted as landlord until his son Barkley took over.[125] He left a will on 1 Dec 1898; where he divided his estate among his three surviving children (Walter had not yet died) and grandchildren. His estate included properties in Toronto on Kensington Ave. and Trafalgar Ave., in East Gwillumbury, and in Orangeville on Mill St. and 2nd Ave., which he specified pass from Walter to his sons and never be sold, especially to Walter's wife or her family. This wish was adjusted by a Codicil added after Walter died.[126] He and Alice Theresa Doyle lived from 1900 to 1904 at Queens Hotel, Bradford, Simcoe Co., Ontario, Canada; where he rented the hotel until his death.[125] He and Alice Theresa Doyle appeared on the census of 1901 at lots 5 & 6 Holland N.D., Bradford, Simcoe Co., Ontario, Canada; where Henry (61) ran a 35-room hotel, owned also 5 town lots and 200 acres of farm land. Alice (57) was present, as were their children Mary Jane Haltorf [sic] (33) widowed, Henry (26) drover, and grandchildren Alice Haltorf (13), Irene Haltorf (14) and Barkley (4). Four domestic servants were recorded.[127] In his obituary, Henry's wealth was reported to include three farms of 100 acres each in Pottageville, Schomberg and Orangville, and a 197 acre farm near Newmarket, a house and store in Toronto, and a house and livery business in Orangeville. His politics were Conservative, he was a member of the A.O.U.W. of the Knights of Phythias, and the Manufacturers Life Association. 8. Joseph Henry4 HULSE (child of John3, Thomas2, Thomas1);[89],[89] born circa 1859 at King Twp., York Co., Canada West (Ontario), British North America (Canada);[88],[152] married Henrietta N. Dennis 14 Sep 1881 at Lloydtown, York Co., Ontario, Canada; where Joseph (21) of Schomberg, was a cabinet maker, and Henrietta (20) of Schomberg, was daughter of Levi and Lydia Dennis;[153],[154] married Matilda Ann Mines 12 Sep 1894 at Caradoc Twp., Middlesex Co., Ontario, Canada; where Joseph was an Undertaker (34) from Orangeville and widower and Matilda was 27;[155] died "Orangeville and district sustained a severe loss this week through the death of Joseph Henry Hulse, who passed away in Lord Dufferin Hospital at three o'clock on Sunday morning after an illness of two weeks from influenza and pneumonia. Deceased had been identified with the business life of this town for 44 years and was widely known in Orangeville and surrounding townships. The late Mr. Hulse, who was 67 years of age, was born at Pottageville, near Schomberg, in the county of York, being a son of the late John S. and Letitia Moore Hulse. While in his boyhood the family moved to Schomberg, where he learned the undertaking business with Stephen Armitage, whom he afterwards bought out. He remained in business in Schomberg for four years and in 1883 moved to Orangeville and opened undertaking parlors here, which he has since conducted. For twenty six years he was a valued member of the High School Board and had filled the office of chairman for several terms. In recent years he had filled the responsible position of chairman of the Property Committee and in this capacity took an active interest in improvements to the school premises. A talented musician he was for many years leader of the Orangeville Orchestra and was at one time bandmaster of the Orangeville Citizens Band. Mr. Hulse was an adherent of St. Mark's church and a staunch Conservative in politics. He was a member and a Past Master of Harris Lodge, No. 216, A.F. & a.M. and was also identified with Ionic Chapter No. 83 Royal Arch. Masons and with Loyal Orange Lodge No. 2931 and previously with Aaron L.O.L. No. 427. He took a keen interest in outdoor sports and was an active member of the Orangeville Curling and Lawn Bowling Clubs. Kindly, courtous and sympathetic, Mr. Hulse was held in high esteem by the whole community. He was a man of few words, but his judgment was always carefully considered and his opinion on any question was always sane and reasonable. Deceased was twice married - in 1881 to Miss Henrietta Norris Dennis, of Schomberg, and in 1894 to Miss Tillie A. Mines of Mount Brydges. His demise is mourned by three daughters, Mrs. H.N Modeland, of Transcona, Man., and Mises Clara and Adelia, at home, one brother, M. J.J. Hulse, of Orangeville, and a sister, Mrs. (Dr.) C.H. Brereton, of Toronto. To these the sympathy of the whole community is tendered in their great loss" 30 Jan 1927 at Lord Dufferin Hospital, Orangeville, Dufferin Co., Ontario, Canada.[156] Henrietta N.
