1. Thomas1 HULSE; born circa 1777;[1] married Hannah Taylor, daughter of Joseph Taylor and Sarah Barnett, 17 Sep 1797 at St. Nicholas parish, Nottingham, Co. Nottingham, England; where Thomas was of St. Nicholas parish, and Hannah of St. Mary's parish, Nottingham, by license, by Charles Wylde. Both signed their names, witnessed by Martha Osborn and John Upton;[2] died "aged 57, after a long and painful illness" 5 May 1827 at Spaniel row, Nottingham, Co. Nottingham, England;[3] buried 7 May 1827 at St. Nicholas parish, Nottingham, Co. Nottingham, England, "aged 50."[4]

He lived in 1797 at St. Nicholas parish, Nottingham, Co. Nottingham, England.[5] He and Hannah Taylor lived between 1812 and 1815 at Greyhound street, Nottingham, Co. Nottingham, England.[6] He was a baker between 1814 and 1818 at Greyhound street, Nottingham, Co. Nottingham, England.[7] He was a hatter in 1815 at Greyhound street, Nottingham, Co. Hannah TAYLOR[10],[11] was baptized on 4 Apr 1775 at St. Mary's, Nottingham, Co. Nottingham, England.[12] She died at her son's house... aged 59, after a long and painful illness on 2 Aug 1834 at Milton street, Nottingham, Co. Nottingham, England, at age 59.[13] She was buried on 6 Aug 1834 at St. Nicholas parish, Nottingham, Co. Nottingham, England, "aged 59."[14] She lived in 1797 at St. Mary's parish, Nottingham, Co. Nottingham, England.[15] She lived in 1829 at Spaniel row, Nottingham, Co. Nottingham, England.[16]

    He lived in and was, eventually a colonial magistrate between 1817 and 1834 at British Honduras (Belize).[20]

  • iii. Hannah Hulse;[17],[17] baptized 19 Apr 1802 at St. Nicholas parish, Nottingham, Co. Nottingham, England;[18] married Joseph Hill 20 Nov 1831 at St. Nicholas parish, Nottingham, Co. Nottingham, England; by licence, where both were of that parish, witnessed by David Patterson and Mary Wadlow.[21]

    She lived in 1831 at Granby street, Nottingham, Co. Nottingham, England.[22]

  • iv. William Barnett Hulse;[17],[17] baptized 10 Feb 1804 at St. Nicholas parish, Nottingham, Co. Nottingham, England;[18] married Mary Gell 14 Jan 1830 at St. Nicholas parish, Nottingham, Co. Nottingham, England; where both were of St. Nicholas parish, Mary a widow, witnessed by William Robinson and H Hulse, all signing their names.[23],[24]

    It was said in the newspaper that William appeared in court as a debtor, described as "William Barnett Hulse, formerly of Mount East St. in the town of Nottingham, painter, then of Hyson Green, in the parish of Radford ...lace maker, afterwards traveling to various places in the West Indies and North America as a painter and accountant, then of Basford, ...lacemaker, painter, and retail beer seller, since in lodgings at Mr. Whitehall's in Edmond St., Liverpool, painter and late of Basford, ...out of business." He was sued, but when unopposed in court, was discharged.[25],[26]

Nottingham, England.[30] He Henry of New Basford with three others was convicted of disorderly conduct in Nov 1839 at Nottingham, Co. Nottingham, England.[31]

2. Thomas2 HULSE (child of Thomas1);[32],[33] born circa 1798 at Co. Nottingham, England;[34],[35],[36] married Mary Smith 26 Feb 1824 at St. Mary's, Nottingham, Co. Nottingham, England; by banns, where Mary was surnamed Smith, witnessed by W. Ridsdale, Hannah Hulse, Mary Hulse;[37],[38],[39] died aged 59 years 24 Apr 1857.[40]

Thomas' portrait was painted around the 1820's or 30's -- a photograph of this portrait exists today.[41] He was a lace manufacturer between 1824 and 1841 at Co. Nottingham, England.[42] Between 1824 and 1828, Thomas Hulse and Mary Smith lived at Lenton, Co. Nottingham, England, for the births of Joseph, John and Mathew.[43] He and Mary Smith lived in 1831 at Clare St, Nottingham, Co. Nottingham, England.[44] In 1833, Thomas Hulse and Mary Smith may have lived at Crofts Street, Nottingham, Co. Nottingham, England, for baptism of Thomas.[45] Between 1836 and 1842, Thomas Hulse and Mary Smith lived at Basford, Co. Nottingham, England, for baptism of Thomas (1836) and birth of Henry (1839).[46] He and Mary Smith appeared on the census of 1841 at Rawson St, New Basford, Co. Nottingham, England; where Thomas (40) was a lace maker. Mary (35), Joseph (15) and John (14) both journeymen lace makers, Mathew (12), Mary (9) and Henry (2) were present, and all of the family was born in Co. Nottingham.[47] He and Mary Smith emigrated in 1842 to British North America (Canada).[48] He was a school teacher in King Twp. and a hotel keeper in Pottageville in 1845.[49] He and Mary Smith appeared on the census of 1851 at King Twp., York Co., Canada West (Ontario), British North America (Canada); where Thomas (54) was a yeoman and innkeeper; Mary (49), and children John (25) a cooper, Mathew (23), Mary Ann (21), Henry (12) and William (9) were present. The family lived in a 2-story frame house and inn with 3 staff.[50]

Mary SMITH was born circa 1802 at Co. Nottingham, England.[51],[52] She died aged 95 years on 30 Mar 1894.[53],[40] She was buried on 1 Apr 1894 at English churchyard, Lloydtown, York Co., Ontario, Canada.[54] She was also known as Mary Barnett.[55] She and Henry Hulse lived in 1858 at Lloydtown, York Co., Canada West (Ontario), British North America (Canada); where the family moved after Thomas' death in 1857.[56] She and Henry Hulse appeared on the census of 1861 at King Twp., York Co., Canada West (Ontario), British North America (Canada); where Henry was 22, mother Mary (59) and William George (19) were also present. They lived in a single-story frame house in or near Lloydtown.[57] She appeared on the census of 1871 at King Twp., York Co., Ontario, Canada; where Mary (69) was widowed, and living 'in town' on an 8th-acre in consession 9, lot 31.[58] Mary's photo was taken late in her life. A copy still exists.[41] She appeared on the census of 1881 at King Twp., York Co., Ontario, Canada; where Mary (78) was widowed, born in England.[59] She appeared on the census of 1891 at Wilson House, Toronto, York Co., Ontario, Canada; where Mary (88) was with her son, hotel proprietor.[60]

3. Joseph Taylor3 HULSE (child of Thomas2, Thomas1); christened 12 Sep 1824 at Lenton, Co. Nottingham, England;[70] married Mary (--?--);[71] died of cancer 23 Aug 1900 at 344 Shaw, Toronto, York Co., Ontario, Canada, at age 75.[72]

He may have lived in 1857 at Nottawa, Simcoe Co., Canada West (Ontario), British North America (Canada); where he was a cooper.[73] He appeared on the census of 1881 at London, Ontario, Canada; where Joseph (55), born England, was a cutler [knife maker/dealer], and Mary (54), Sarah (17) and Mary (10) were present.[74]

Mary (--?--) was born circa 1827 at Upper Canada (Ontario), British North America (Canada).[75]

4. John Smith3 HULSE (child of Thomas2, Thomas1); baptized 28 May 1826 at Lenton, Co. Nottingham, England;[77],[78] married Letitia Moore;[79] died aged 42 years, buried at sea 28 Jul 1868 at age 42.[80]

John was the enumerator for the 1861 census for District #10 in King Township, in March of that year.[81] He and Letitia Moore appeared on the census of 9 Mar 1861 at King Twp., York Co., Canada West (Ontario), British North America (Canada); and John (34) was an English-born tavern keeper, Lyticia (29) from Ireland, and children Adelia J. (5), Joseph Henry (2) were present, and two other boarders.[82]

Letitia MOORE was born circa 1826.[83] She died on 3 Jul 1913 at Orangeville, Dufferin Co., Ontario, Canada.[40],[84] She appeared on the census of 1881 at King Twp., York Co., Ontario, Canada; where Letitia (48) was a widow, and Jospeh H. (21) a cabinet maker, Mathew M. (19), Letitia (17), and John J. (14) were also present.[85]

5. Mathew3 HULSE (child of Thomas2, Thomas1); born 1 Jun 1828;[93] christened 29 Jun 1828 at Lenton, Co. Nottingham, England;[94],[95] married Mary Margaret Ramsey 1853; Mary was a sea captain's daughter from Cornwall, England, then living in

Schomberg.[96]

Mathew was a lifetime farmer in the area of Schomberg, Ontario.[97] He and Mary Margaret Ramsey appeared on the census of 1881 at King Twp., York Co., Ontario, Canada; where Mathew (52) of England was a farmer, Margaret (50), Thomas (24) an agent, Mary E. (22), Robert (19) and George B. (17) were present.[98]

Mary Margaret RAMSEY died on 24 Jul 1905.[93] She and George Britton Hulse appeared on the census of 1901 at King Twp., York Co., Ontario, Canada; where George (36), Stella (28), Florence (2), Vera (1) and George's mother Mrs. M (70) a widow, were present.[99]

6. Henry3 HULSE (child of Thomas2, Thomas1);[107],[108] born 7 Aug 1839 at Basford, Co. Nottingham, England;[109],[110],[111] married Alice Theresa Doyle, daughter of James Doyle and Jane Deacon, 8 Sep 1864 at Lloydtown, York Co., Canada West (Ontario), British North America (Canada); where Henry was recorded as 25, born in England; Alice was 22, born in Tecumseth Twp.; witnessed by John and Elizabeth Elgie of Toronto;[112] died of a bladder growth and bowel obstruction 10 Feb 1904 at Holland St., Bradford, Simcoe Co., Ontario, Canada, at age 64.[113],[114]

He emigrated in 1842 to British North America (Canada); with his parents and siblings.[115] He and Mary Smith lived in 1858 at Lloydtown, York Co., Canada West (Ontario), British North America (Canada); where the family moved after Thomas' death in 1857.[56] He was a mail-carrier between Lloydtown and Aurora from 1858 to 1864.[116] He and Mary Smith appeared on the census of 1861 at King Twp., York Co., Canada West (Ontario), British North America (Canada); where Henry was 22, mother Mary (59) and William George (19) were also present. They lived in a single-story frame house in or near Lloydtown.[57] He and Alice Theresa Doyle lived after 1864 at King Twp., York Co., Canada West (Ontario), British North America (Canada); on a farm.[56] He and Alice Theresa Doyle lived from 1868 to 1877 at Schomberg, King Township, York Co., Ontario, Canada; running the hotel owned previously by his late brother John.[56] He and Alice Theresa Doyle appeared on the census of 1871 at Schomberg, King Township, York Co., Ontario, Canada; where Henry was 30 year old Hotel Keeper, Alice was 27, children Mary J. (4) and Bartley (1) were also present. They lived on 6 acres on concession 9, lot 33 (Schomberg), having 1 house, 1 barn, 4 carriages, 5 wagons, 2 ploughs and a fanning mill. 5 1/2 acres were pasture. Henry also owned 1 town lot (upon which must have been the hotel).[117] He and Alice Theresa Doyle lived in 1877; on the Clarkson-Hughes farm, but stayed only one year.[49] Took possession of the Royal Hotel of Newmarket, 3 Jan 1878.[118] He and Alice Theresa Doyle lived from 2 Jan 1878 to 1881 at Royal Hotel, Newmarket, Ontario, Canada; for four years.[119],[118] He and Alice Theresa Doyle appeared on the census of 1881 at Newmarket, York Co., Ontario, Canada; where Henry (39) was a Hotel Keeper, and Alice (36), Mary Jane (14), Barkley (11), Walter (9), Addie (7), and Henry (5) were present.[120] He and Alice Theresa Doyle lived between 1883 and 1889 at Paisly House, Orangeville, Dufferin Co., Ontario, Canada.[121] He and Alice Theresa Doyle lived from 1889 to 1897 at Wilson House, Toronto, York Co., Ontario, Canada; Henry was the proprietor of Wilson House, a hotel in Toronto, at 111-113 York Street, on the south-east corner of Pearl. Walter was a bartender and Barkley was the clerk. A photo of Wilson House in circa 1900 exists.[122],[123],[56] He and Alice Theresa Doyle appeared on the census of 1891 at St. Andrew's Ward, Toronto, York Co., Ontario, Canada; where Henry (51), a hotel keeper with 5 employees, and Alice (48). Bartly (21) head clerk, Walter (19), Harry (15), Alice (17) and Henry's mother Mary (88) were also present.[124] He and Alice Theresa Doyle lived from 1897 to 1900 at Central Hotel, Bradford, Simcoe Co., Ontario, Canada; where he acted as landlord until his son Barkley took over.[125] He left a will on 1 Dec 1898; where he divided his estate among his three surviving children (Walter had not yet died) and grandchildren. His estate included properties in Toronto on Kensington Ave. and Trafalgar Ave., in East Gwillumbury, and in Orangeville on Mill St. and 2nd Ave., which he specified pass from Walter to his sons and never be sold, especially to Walter's wife or her family. This wish was adjusted by a Codicil added after Walter died.[126] He and Alice Theresa Doyle lived from 1900 to 1904 at Queens Hotel, Bradford, Simcoe Co., Ontario, Canada; where he rented the hotel until his death.[125] He and Alice Theresa Doyle appeared on the census of 1901 at lots 5 & 6 Holland N.D., Bradford, Simcoe Co., Ontario, Canada; where Henry (61) ran a 35-room hotel, owned also 5 town lots and 200 acres of farm land. Alice (57) was present, as were their children Mary Jane Haltorf [sic] (33) widowed, Henry (26) drover, and grandchildren Alice Haltorf (13), Irene Haltorf (14) and Barkley (4). Four domestic servants were recorded.[127] In his obituary, Henry's wealth was reported to include three farms of 100 acres each in Pottageville, Schomberg and Orangville, and a 197 acre farm near Newmarket, a house and store in Toronto, and a house and livery business in Orangeville. His politics were Conservative, he was a member of the A.O.U.W. of the Knights of Phythias, and the Manufacturers Life Association. The funeral procession was headed by 40 members of the Workman Order.[49]

Alice Theresa DOYLE[128],[129] was born on 10 Apr 1843 at Tecumseth Township, Simcoe Co., Canada West (Ontario), British North America (Canada).[130],[131] She died of bronchial pneumonia on 30 May 1920 at 35 Raymond Ave., Toronto, York Co., Ontario, Canada, at age 77.[132],[133] She was buried on 1 Jun 1920 at Newmarket, Ontario, Canada.[134] She appeared on the census of 1861 at Lloydtown, York Co., Canada West (Ontario), British North America (Canada); where Alice (20) was living with siblings John (27) a shoemaker, William (23) an innkeeper, and Jane (22) a tailoress in their two-story frame house.[135] She appeared on the census of 1911 at Main St., Newmarket, York Co., Ontario, Canada; where her son Henry (35) a drover, Cordelia Maud (35), and Alice (66) were present.[136]

Alice Adeline Hulse; born 18 Feb 1874 at Schomberg, King Township, York Co., Ontario, Canada;[140],[141],[142] died of consumption 21 Mar 1895 at Bradford, Simcoe Co., Ontario, Canada, at age 21;[132] buried Mar 1895 at Newmarket Cemetery, Newmarket, York Co., Ontario, Canada, the hotel keeper's daughter, aged 21 years. The burial was recorded in register of Trinity Church, Bradford.[143]

William George3 HULSE (child of Thomas2, Thomas1); born circa 1842 at Canada West (Ontario), British North America (Canada);[144] married Mary Cassady 31 Mar 1866 at York Co., Canada West (Ontario), British North America (Canada); where William (22) was of Schomberg, and Mary (19) was of Lloydtown.[145],[146]

Dennis 14 Sep 1881 at Lloydtown, York Co., Ontario, Canada; where Joseph (21) of Schomberg, was a cabinet maker, and Henrietta (20) of Schomberg, was daughter of Levi and Lydia Dennis;[153],[154] married Matilda Ann Mines 12 Sep 1894 at Caradoc Twp., Middlesex Co., Ontario, Canada; where Joseph was an Undertaker (34) from Orangeville and widower and Matilda was 27;[155] died "Orangeville and district sustained a severe loss this week through the death of Joseph Henry Hulse, who passed away in Lord Dufferin Hospital at three o'clock on Sunday morning after an illness of two weeks from influenza and pneumonia. Deceased had been identified with the business life of this town for 44 years and was widely known in Orangeville and surrounding townships. The late Mr. Hulse, who was 67 years of age, was born at Pottageville, near Schomberg, in the county of York, being a son of the late John S. and Letitia Moore Hulse. While in his boyhood the family moved to Schomberg, where he learned the undertaking business with Stephen Armitage, whom he afterwards bought out. He remained in business in Schomberg for four years and in 1883 moved to Orangeville and opened undertaking parlors here, which he has since conducted. For twenty six years he was a valued member of the High School Board and had filled the office of chairman for several terms. In recent years he had filled the responsible position of chairman of the Property Committee and in this capacity took an active interest in improvements to the school premises. A talented musician he was for many years leader of the Orangeville Orchestra and was at one time bandmaster of the Orangeville Citizens Band. Mr. Hulse was an adherent of St. Mark's church and a staunch Conservative in politics. He was a member and a Past Master of Harris Lodge, No. 216, A.F. & a.M. and was also identified with Ionic Chapter No. 83 Royal Arch. Masons and with Loyal Orange Lodge No. 2931 and previously with Aaron L.O.L. No. 427. He took a keen interest in outdoor sports and was an active member of the Orangeville Curling and Lawn Bowling Clubs. Kindly, courtous and sympathetic, Mr. Hulse was held in high esteem by the whole community. He was a man of few words, but his judgment was always carefully considered and his opinion on any question was always sane and reasonable. Deceased was twice married - in 1881 to Miss Henrietta Norris Dennis, of Schomberg, and in 1894 to Miss Tillie A. Mines of Mount Brydges. His demise is mourned by three daughters, Mrs. H.N Modeland, of Transcona, Man., and Mises Clara and Adelia, at home, one brother, M. J.J. Hulse, of Orangeville, and a sister, Mrs. (Dr.) C.H. Brereton, of Toronto. To these the sympathy of the whole community is tendered in their great loss" 30 Jan 1927 at Lord Dufferin Hospital, Orangeville, Dufferin Co., Ontario, Canada.[156]

Henrietta N. DENNIS was born on 13 Apr 1861.[157] She died on 30 Jan 1889 at Orangeville, Dufferin Co., Ontario, Canada, at age 27.[158],[159] She appeared on the census of 1881 at King Twp., York Co., Ontario, Canada; where Henrietta Dennis (19) appears with father Levi Dennis (63) and family in King Township, and this may be Joseph's future wife.[160]

Children of Joseph Henry4 Hulse and Henrietta N. Dennis were as follows:

  • i. Edna5 Hulse;[161],[161] born 31 Mar 1882;[158] died 1882.[162],[158],[163]

  • ii. James Francis Hulse;[161],[161] born 26 Sep 1888;[164] died 20 Aug 1889.[158]

    James' mother had died 8 months earlier, and he had a sister who died an infant in 1882. His father Joseph had the following inscribed on the base of their grave stone, "Thy Will Be Done."[165]

Matilda Ann MINES was born circa 1867 at King Twp., York Co., Ontario, Canada.[166]

There were no children of Joseph Henry4 Hulse and Matilda Ann Mines.

    9. John J.4 HULSE (child of John3, Thomas2, Thomas1);[86],[86] born 31 Jul 1866;[40] married Mary Isabella Perry 23 Mar 1894 at Lloydtown, York Co., Ontario, Canada; where John was a merchant tailor from Orangeville (26), and Mary was 21;[79],[167] died 15 Dec 1943 at age 77.[40]

    Mary Isabella PERRY was born circa 1871.[83] She died in 1954.[83]
