The
Marriage of Henry Holtorf and May Hulse
1886 |
Poppa had always thought
Henry Holtorf was a stock broker from Chicago,
and that he met his bride May Hulse
and eloped over the wall of her private girl's school and took her back
to the States. Where the truth lies in that story has not been discovered.
Henry and May had two children, both of them being born in Ontario: Alice Theresa Holtorf born 1888, and Mabel Irene Holtorf born in 1889. |
Their
adventure in Chicago
1890-1898 |
Between the birth of their last daughter in 1889, and May's return
home no more than a decade later, the story goes that Henry brought the
young family to Chicago. There he sought his fortune as some sort of salesman
or broker and then suddenly died.
There is a notation in an immigration list for a Hans Henry Holtorf in Scott, Iowa in 1887 and 1898, but no follow-up has been made on that information. There is no record of Henry's death in Ontario, yet when May and her two daughters returned home she called herself a widow. One day we will discover his fate, but it may be that there were Holtorf relatives in Chicago at the time. |
