Joseph Wixson Sr.
1840's |
Joseph Sr. continued his political
career in Upper Canada and the new Province of Canada. In 1836 Joseph became
a Commissioner, or Town Warden, as it was later called in Pickering Township.
He gave control of his original farm to his son Joseph Jr., after severing
several plots in the south-west corner where a small village began forming
in the 1840's. It was named Nobel's Corners after a local merchant, and
took up the four corners of the Brock Road and the Ninth Concession Road.
Historical summary: 1840's Joseph Sr. became more active in his brother's church, being baptised in 1847. It was on the orginal farm that the congregation agreed a permanent house of worship be built. Up to this point, services were held in various places -- the schoolhouse on the 7th con. in Pickering, the schoolhouse on the 9th con. in Whitchurch, in the Town of Uxbridge, with baptisms held in local creeks. In March of 1850, Joshua Sr. and the church members agreed to purchase three-quarters of an acre of land at seven pounds, ten shillings from Joseph Jr. They would build a plank chapel 28 feet wide and 34 feet long. |

In December of that year, Joshua Sr. died, and never saw
completion of his parish's church. He had taken on Mr. David Evans in 1848
to perform the baptisms and services, and was 70 years old when he passed
away. Joshua was buried beside the church, in which the first service was
held in the fall of 1851.
