Edward's
sons and descendants |
Recently, the fate of Edward's sons has come to light after
a visit to the Barrie Union Cemetery. There exists Dr. Edward's grave,
and those of four of his sons, marked by a conspicuous granite cross.
Francis George Morton died 2 Oct 1923 (age 58). William Laughton Morton
died 6 Dec 1941 (age about 78) - no stone. Ernest James Otivay Morton died
2 Mar 1953 (age 81) and his brother Henry Hubert two months later, 29 Apr
1953 (age 75).
There exists an obituary for William in the Fort William newspaper,
but a copy has not yet been acquired.
Some of Francis George Morton's family also rest there:
-
wife Emma Ellen (Emel) Foster (1868-1954), daughter of Capt. Edward Foster,
married 12 Nov 1896 in Shanty Bay (7)
-
son Edward Basil Gowan Morton (1898-1918), for whom a memorial stone reads:
Captain Edward Basil Gowan Morton
Flight Commander 98th Squadron
RAF late RFC
Eldest son of Francis George and Emel Morton
April 10 1898
missing July 16 1918
near Dormans, Marne, France
-
son Max Foster Deane Morton (1901-1917), who died of appendicitis age 16
(8),
-
possible third son Philip Strathy Ardagh Morton, born 4 Oct 1903, died
11 Jul 1986 and his wife Berthe Louise who died 30 Aug 1990.
There are no spouses or children buried with William, James or Henry. It
appears that William had originally bought two 5-occupant plots in 1916
after Dr. Edward's death, but on the owner certificate provided by the
cemetery steward, his name is crossed out and replaced by 2nd wife Annie's.
Ernest and Henry's plots are side-by-side, but across the path and north
of the others. They were purchased by their respective estates and their
names appear on the same plain flat stone. No obituaries have yet been
found in the Barrie Examiner during the following month. |
