Immigrates
to Canada |
Edward arrived in Canada West in 1856. He attended the new School of
Medicine at the University of Toronto, graduating in 1860 with a Bachelor
of Medicine degree and becoming a physician like his brother George.
Historical summaries: 1850's
1860's
We don’t know what Edward did after graduating. It’s most likely that
he remained in Toronto, and relocated to Barrie in 1862, taking up the
practice of the late Dr. Archibald Pass. He began his career in Barrie
at Fraser's hotel (4).
We do know that he must have visited his brother George
in Bradford around the time that Cornie’s sister Tat
was there. Tat had been recorded by the census as living both in Holland
Landing with her parents, and for a time with George and Cornie in 1861.
She declared on her marriage record that she was from Bradford in 1863. |
Marries
Tat |
Edward came to marry Tat - Arabella Anna Laughton at Trinity Church
Bradford. Edward and Tat lived in Barrie, beginning with a house on what
may now be called the Bothwell Block (5),
cited as having several grooms, domestics and servants. From 1863 to 1878
they had six children, all boys.

As a personal point of interest, while examining the records of birth
and deaths in Barrie during Edward's time there, you'll see many of entries
he made. In the birth register of February 1882, there are entries made
by Edward one day before the record of Milton
Ernest Bone from nearby Allendale, my great-grandfather. (Small world!) |
New
home
in 1876 |
Edward built a new home at 158 Dunlop Street East in 1875-76.
It was described as a bright buff-coloured brick, Victorian home (6).
Historical summaries: 1870's
1880's
It was also noted that Edward did not participate in municipal affairs
as many "leading citizens of the early years" of Barrie. His hobby was
in breeding shorthorn cattle, at which he gained some renown. His farm
in Innisfil was named Clonmore. |
Four
sons leave home |
Edward's son Francis was away from home for the 1881 census. He would
have been 15 and isn't mentioned again until 1895. Ernest also left home
sometime in the 1870's and moved in with
his uncle George .
William studied law and eventually practised in Toronto, living with brother
Ernest at Uncle George's .
Reginald studied medicine at University of Toronto, like his father, and
graduated in 1890 with an M.D. and C.M. at age 21. He proceeded to study
post graduate work in England and Austria before practising in London.
Associated with the Western Hospital there, he was widely known for his
treatment of cancer. Walter also left home in the 1890's, but aside from
a Toronto residence, his fate is unknown at present. |
Australian
nieces arrive
1890's |
Arriving at Edward's household in the mid-1890's were two of his nieces
from Australia :
Emily Morton (b.c. 1885) and Eveline (b.c. 1888). They stayed with their
uncle until each married. It's said one lived in Barrie with a husband
who was a dentist, last name beginning with "C" -- probably Emily. The
other became widowed and lived in Hamilton -- probably Eveline.

Ernest
returns
1895 |
Ernest returned home
in 1895, after the death of Uncle George. William moved to Fort William
(Thunder Bay) and was a lawyer. Henry began working as a clerk in a bank
earning half his father's yearly wage. With their two sons and two nieces,
Edward and Tat remained in Barrie
beyond the turn of the century. |
